We are specifically looking for someone with 5 years' experience working in a data warehousing environment or 3 years working as a Business Intelligence Architect, and 3 years as an ETL developer in BI/Data Warehousing.
Job Description
The Data Warehouse Architect is responsible for facilitating a data analytics architecture to support data-driven decision-making, developing business intelligence and analytical solutions to solve complex business problems, and creating rapid prototypes with team members leveraging both traditional BI and database technologies and alternative solutions. This position will affect the reporting platform for all of the technology departments and may interface with other entities. 
Essential Functions
Oversee data analytics architecture; cooperate with other campus entities to develop University database solutions
  • Understand and support all technical levels of data consumers (consumer, explorer, report writer, dashboard developer, and data scientist)
  • Analyze, design, and implement data architecture to support business process and reporting requirements utilizing 'Best in Class' data warehousing standards. Successfully build and deploy semantic layer and data models to deliver an effective and scalable reporting environment
  • Architect data to support an ad-hoc BI/reporting environment
Facilitate the continuing development of data management capabilities
  • Utilize an understanding of the underlying application and system data and an understanding of end-user reporting needs to enable canned reporting, dashboards, ad hoc analysis, and advanced analytics
  • Plan for the warehouse platform, which includes defining standards, implementing industry best practices & trends, exploring new capabilities available in the market, and making recommendations concerning design, enterprise data warehouse (EDW), dashboards and reports, and ETL (extract, transform, load)
Assist ETL developers to define ETL/ELT architecture and analyzes data mart and data model requirements
  • Facilitate the continuing development of business intelligence and analytical solutions
    • Provide architectural and reporting solutions with all data types (structured, semi-structured, and unstructured)
    • Supervise part-time employees and possibly full-time employees who will assist with this effort.
  • Oversee database technologies
    • Working closely with business intelligence (BI) developers and the data governance group to safeguard data access while enabling decision-makers the ability to access data that they need
  • Act as a resource to all of the technology department and data management teams
    • Provide consultative guidance to support teams when needed. Lead design discussions and decisions as it relates to business intelligence and database solutions
    • Provide technical training to external team members to foster stronger cross-departmental relations.
    • Serve as a project manager when required, coordinating resources, developing project plans, and ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of work performed by the project team
    • Developing Tableau dashboards and other reporting systems as needed
Education and Experience
To perform the duties of this position effectively, one would require a minimum of a bachelor's degree and 5 years' experience working in a data warehousing environment. 
In addition to this, an advanced degree in technical or business disciplines, 3 years working as a Business Intelligence Architect, and 3 years as an ETL developer in BI/Data Warehousing are desired. 
Technical Skills
While you do not need a mastery of each skill listed, the most successful applicants will have a strong understanding and mastery of a majority of the listed skills. 
  • Expertise in establishing methodologies and implementing structured ways of analyzing business problems
  • Strong SQL development/scripting skills (Oracle preferred)
  • Project management experience (Agile preferred)
  • Development experience with Tableau (1-2 years) or similar
  • Understanding of Kimball Data Warehousing methodology
  • Ability to work across groups in a decentralized environment to support multiple reporting needs across departments
  • Ability to build bridges with other teams and departments across departments
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a team to both lead and be led by peers in projects
  • Skills relating to working with an HDFS data environment (preferred)
  • Exposure to Business Objects, Power BI, or other BI tools (preferred)
